Year 2 Home Learning

Below are activities for you and your child to do during this time at home.  These are what we would cover in school, so completing as many of them as possible will ensure your child’s progress continues:

Reading

Writing

https://www.literacyshed.com/home.html (Website full of short films)

http://www.pobble365.com/ (A picture per day to inspire writing)

Children could write a prediction about what will happen next, write stories, write instructions, information texts.

  • We are about to focus on homophones in spelling. Homophones are words which sound the same but have different meanings and/or spellings. Look at the posters linked below and make your own poster/PowerPoint/booklet about homophones. Maybe you could try writing a story/poem/silly rhyme using homophones.

  • We always focus on using capital letters and full stops correctly in our writing. Practise rainbow writing (using a different colour pen/pencil per sentence) or write a passage for your child with missing capital letters and full stops for them to correct.

Maths

  • Use the MyMaths website – we have activated several useful activities for you
  • Number facts to practise, you could always make a poster about these: number bonds pairs of numbers that total numbers from 0 – 20, counting in 3s, 2, 5 and 10 times tables and related division facts, counting forwards and backwards in tens from different starting points http://www.year2maths.co.uk/mmm/mmm.htm (Do not worry about the time limit)
  • https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ - particularly Daily 10, Hit the Button, Place Value Basketball (anything in the 5 – 7 category)
  • Telling the time at o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. If confident on this, look at 5 minute intervals http://www.snappymaths.com/other/measuring/time/time.htm
  • Practice SAT papers

Science

This term our Science topic is Animals, Including Humans.  We have looked at how baby animals grow in to adult animals and how they change e.g.  caterpillar to butterfly.  We have also talked about the need for a healthy, balanced diet and created our own meal plans.  Finally, we have discussed how to keep ourselves healthy – through exercise and keeping clean.

The BBC has some interesting clips about healthy eating:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zv4cwmn/resources/1

There are also many clips and games about Animals:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z6882hv

We used this topic pack on Twinkl as a basis for our lessons:
https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/tp-sc-099-planit-science-y2-animals-including-humans-lesson-1-animal-babies-lesson-pack

It would be great if your children could complete some projects around this Science topic.  They could choose any of the following:

  • Prepare a leaflet to explain to people the importance of healthy eating
  • Create a poster to share the importance of washing our hands
  • Research your favourite animal and what it needs to stay healthy and strong
  • Create a ‘staying healthy’ board or card game
  • Keep a food diary, creating a key for the different food types eaten throughout the day

Topic

We are learning about explorers and inventors. Use the websites below to research some different explorers. Make a poster or information page about a chosen explorer. Also spend time discussing the continents and oceans of the world.
